National Lab Day is an ongoing grassroots initiative with a mission to bring together volunteers, university students, educators, scientists, engineers, and other STEM professionals to provide discovery-based science experiences to the community.

It is a day when people can visit a national laboratory and learn about cutting-edge research and technology, while also gaining insight into the many ways in which national laboratories make a difference in our everyday lives.
The idea for National Lab Day was conceived in 2009 by Secretary of Energy Steven Chu, who saw an opportunity to engage Americans with science and technology in their daily lives through visits to Department of Energy laboratories.
